Marathons & Nationals 2010

posted Jun 13, 2010 12:05 PM by Unknown user   [ updated Jun 13, 2010 12:23 PM ]

Our Team shows what it is to be active, work hard, be mental prepared, reaching goals and most of all have team spirit & fun..
During spring many of our tri swimmers have participated in marathons preparing for the up coming tri-season etc. It is great to see that so many have completed 1/2 and full marathons. Some of the tri swimmers qualified for and or ran the Boston marathon.. Congratulations to all.. If your name is not mentioned and you participated in the runs, please email Kathy Jackson cjackson5@cogeco.ca or me with your results. This is the only way we can keep track of Tri and running results..
Further more a small group of our swimmers,Sylvie Tremblay, Sonia Lopes, Katie Swift, Janice Gibbs and I went to Nanaimo BC to participate in the Canadian Masters Championship 2010, swimming with some of the worlds best masters swimmers. Our swimmers did awesome, swimming long course setting personal record, after personal record.. With Sylvie Tremblay having a powerful weekend, among her medal harvest winning 5 individual gold medals. Her contagious positive attitude got all of us in a powerful mind set to swim fast and of cause to go down the water slide.. . We won 7 gold, 4 silver, 3 bronze and lots of places among top 8. Our Relay team won a bronze and a silver see pictures. It was very exciting to watch everyone swim. Some of the highlights to watch for me as a coach was our relay team swimming optimal 100% they were on fire, winning a bronze medal. An other was watching the females 65-69 year old age group swimming . One person in particular Bonnie Pronk swam just like a 16 year old would swim today. I should say, when winner Bonnie Pronk was younger, she would be disqualified in breast stroke, if her head was just under the water at anytime. Bonnie has learned the new very powerful "wave" breast stroke swimming 50 m on 45.87 long course. "She is probably swimming a lot faster than she did when she was young".. ..  Who says you can teach an old dog new tricks?...Next years Nationals 2011 is in Montreal... mark your calendars.. Always May Long weekend ..One more congratulations goes to Jackie Hatherley for 2009 top ranked master swimmer in Canada and number 9 in the world in her age group ... amazing..

Open Water Swims

posted Mar 25, 2010 1:18 PM by Unknown user   [ updated Apr 8, 2010 6:40 AM ]

Summer is soon here and yes for the tri athletes the fun part of swimming is soon starting.. Free of counting tiles, no wall to be bother resting at and you will not have that great smell of eau de chlorine in your hair..
I would like as many swimmers as possible to attend the open water swim at Brights Grove July 17 and the Welland Canal August 8 during the summer.. It is a great way to train and swim in open water.. Just like training in the pool..yes without a wet suit and the black line on the bottom of the pool. Think about it, you can continue swimming and it is the closest, you can get to an open water swimming practice, without having to bike and run after.. You will need to register with MSO  $35 ASAP. We already have a few of our swimmers attending.
Sue Weir is hosting the Brights Grove event. I spoke with her this past weekend and she said, it is lots of fun... no pressure...Great training....Remember this is not just for tri-athletes..

Provinciels 2010

posted Mar 22, 2010 2:17 PM by Unknown user   [ updated Mar 22, 2010 5:46 PM by Bob Pender ]

Our Club did fantastic at the Ontario Masters Championship the weekend of March 19 to 21.. Our swimmers got 16 gold, 8 silver, 6 bronze medals, 4 fourth, 4 fifth places, a few between fifth tenth places including two Provincials records..Pretty fantastic for a team of 12 swimmers attending..
Janice Gibbs turned out to be like Michael Phelps win after win.. winning individually 5 gold medals and 1 silver medal..
Jackie Hatherley did equally as well winning 5 gold medals and in two of her events setting Provincial records.
Sylvie Trembley, who participated in the Worlds Masters Games in the fall had a great weekend too winning 4 gold medals and 2 bronze medals..(however, I would have liked to see her swimming 50 breast stroke Friday night, as she was the winner last year..someone forgot to register..)
Jennifer Agnew got a silver and a bronze medals, Carrie Head being out of shape (sorry Carrie) doing awesome getting a bronze medal in 100 fly and two silver one on the mixed relay team swimming fly diving in after her husband Don and one on the women's free relay team..
Val, Sonia, Janice and Jennifer won a bronze medal in the IM relay..
Valerie Scott, made sure we all had great treats on our way to London yum thanks Val. On top of that Val surprised and reassured her room mates with earplugs, in case there would be too much noise in the room during the night. Val won the silver medal in 200 m breast stroke..Kate Swift after having been sick swam a very nice 100 m breaststroke and won a silver medal.
On our mens side Don Head did great too winning 2 gold medals, 2 silver and 1 bronze..Michael Laing, Michael Parker, Tom Rebstock did awesome swims too and with Don Head made a great relay team..
However I think that everyone can agree that one of the most exciting swims were the 100m breaststroke in the 50-54 age group category..
Training lane mates Sonia and Val swimming same heat in lane 4 and 5.....This was so exciting to watch as Sonia had the lead more than 3 quarter of the race, Val put on her power and out touched Sonia at the finish line..Shortly thereafter Sonia finished and completed the hardest swim, I think for a swimmer, 200 m butterfly again a very close race for her. She got out touched at the finish line this time for a bronze medal.. But I am sure completing the 200 m fly is worth 5 gold medals. Correct me if I am wrong but no one in our club have ever completed a 200 m butterfly at a meet.
As you all can read it is great fun being at a meet next year the Provincials will be in Ottawa and Nationals in Montreal.. I hope a lot more will plan to go to at least one of these champion ships..
In the pictures Val and Janice with some of the harvest..Kate, Michael L and Don and a smiling provincial record holder Jackie Hatherley..

See you at the pool
Coach Mette
